Zeta-Mu alumnus named lawyer of the month November 2005, taken from Laches: Oakland County Bar Association
James W. Low (ZM, Michigan State ’98), also know as “Jamie” was recently named the Lawyer of the Month for November 2005. Low is an associate with Collins, Einhorn, Farrell, & Ulanoff, PC. He specializes in legal malpractice defense, and also does work in real estate and general civil litigation.
Low received a Bachelor of Science in Health Studies and Psychology from Michigan State University in 1998. During his time at Michigan State, Jamie was active in student government, served as president of Campbell Residence Hall, and was sage of the Zeta-Mu chapter.
After graduation, Low attended the MSU College of Law, where he graduated in 2001. In law school, Low had the unique distinction of being the first student to try a case against a practicing attorney. During his first semester, Low and his former roommates were sued by their former landlord when one of their roommates moved out and failed to pay several months of rent. Low, representing himself, countersued for improvements he and the roommates made on the house that the landlord had promised, but failed to pay for.
“The lawsuit coincided with every class I had along the way. I was served with my first set of interrogatories the day I learned about them in Civil Procedure class. The case went to trial in my second year when I was taking Evidence class,” Low said. After a two-day trial against the landlord’s attorney, Low ended up with a sizable judgment against the landlord. His win at trial made the local news, and Low was named by the Michigan State News on their list of “Winners” of 1999, coming in just after Tom Izzo.
After passing the bar in 2001, Low began working at a small Lansing law firm, where he practiced employment law. In July 2004, he was hired by Collins, Einhorn, Farrell & Ulanoff, PC, and made the move to Oakland County, Michigan.
Throughout his time in Oakland County, Low has been active in various legal organizations. Currently he is a member of the Oakland County Bar Association, the American Bar Association, and the Association of Defense Trial Counsel, and is an Associate with the American Inns of Court. Low has also served as a moot court judge and appellate advocacy judge for MSU College of Law.
