What Is Rush?

We recommend that perspective rushees stop by the chapter house at least two times during the formal week of rush, definitely coming by on Thursday the last day of rush. Bids (invitations from the chapter to perspectives to become a pledge) are given out Thursday. Free food will be served each day and various activities will be taking place at the chapter house. At this time you can meet all the brothers, take a tour of the house and see what Sigma Pi has to offer you. Don't hesitate to call, we'll pick you up!

Why Go Greek?

Some of the best times of your life will be here at Michigan State University. If you're looking to take full advantage of your time at MSU, then you may want to consider joining the Greek system.  There are many benefits of being a part of Sigma Pi Fraternity, International:

| Brotherhood | Leadership| Job Placement | Social | Philanthropy | Scholarship | Athletics | ACE Project |

Brotherhood

As one of the largest fraternities on campus, Sigma Pi takes great pride in having the tightest brotherhood on campus. Other fraternities will talk about their “brotherhood” but here at Sigma Pi it is evident throughout the entire membership. Standing as one of the nicest, largest fraternity houses on campus, our chapter house lives up to 40 members. Joining a fraternity makes campus smaller. You will meet many people and make many friends throughout the Greek and Michigan State community. It’s a chance for you to establish yourself at Michigan State and familiarize yourself with campus and college life.

Character Development/Leadership

There are over 30 leadership positions in Sigma Pi alone. You can be anything from President or Vice President, to the Philanthropy or Scholarship chairman. You get a chance to organize and lead a group of people and set the standards for those to come. It’s a good experience and a great resume builder. Taking up a leadership position can give you the necessary skills for the post-college world and a head up in your job field.  Sigma Pi Fraternity, International hosts multiple leadership conferences every year including Michigan Area Chapter Workshops, the Midyear Leadership Conference in St. Louis, Sigma Pi University in Nashville, TN and the Biennial Convocation.  In 2004, Sigma Pi brothers held 2 of the 7 positions on the MSU Interfraternity Council, most of any fraternity! Fall 2006 marks the 4th consecutive time Sigma Pi has had membership on the Interfraternity Council.

Job Placement/Alumni Relations

Your Sigma Pi experience does not end when you leave college. You will find many business connections through alumni during college for internships and job placement after college. Sigma Pi alumni have played a crucial role with placing our new graduates in the job field the past few years. In addition, Sigma Pi brothers at MSU have the opportunity to join the Zeta-Mu Alumni Association. As an alumnus you share a bond with nearly 100,000 Sigma Pi men and have the opportunity to participate in local alumni clubs and receive Sigma Pi alumni benefits throughout the country.

Social

We are a social organization, so one of our greatest benefits is our social calendar. Throughout the year, Sigma Pi hosts functions with each of the sororities at MSU. We host a variety of events including: theme parties @ the chapter house, fall orchid ball formal in windsor, date parties, paintball trips, 2nd semester spring break trip, big bro/little bro nights, fall tailgate with a sorority, closed rush (huge 1 on 1) both fall and spring semesters with sororities and a ski weekend with a sorority in the winter. Here's a more in depth look at some of the social events we host: Date parties-  This is when new members and actives invite their dates, and our  chapter goes cosmic bowling, to a Tigers games, on a hay ride, etc. Formal/semi-formal-  Formal is similar to Prom.  It is a black tie event in celebration of our accomplishments as a chapter in the last year.  This fall, we are having formal the last weekend in October in Windsor, Ontario.  Semi-Formal is in the spring.  It is the same kind of event, but shirt and tie dress. Theme parties-  The past few years, we have had several theme parties at our chapter house.  They included a Highschool Cliques party, an 80's party, Beach party,a CEO's party, Graffiti parties, a Toga party and many others.  We also have sporadic social events during the semester at our at our chapter house.

Philanthropy

The biggest fundraiser in the Greek community each year is Greek Week. In this semester long competition each team fundraises to benefit local charities such as the American Cancer Society & the Area 8 Special Olympics. Sigma Pi has won 1st place the last four years in charity fundraising, raising over $18,000 with the ladies of Kappa Delta this past year. A “heavy weight” Greek Week contender, Sigma Pi has placed in the top four places for the last five years, winning back-to-back titles in 2000 & 2001.  Again this spring, Sigma Pi was crowned 2005 Greek Week Champions. In the fall, Sigma Pi hosts the annual Miss Greek Beauty Pageant, benefiting the American Red Cross, in which sorority women fiercely compete for the crown. In its sixth year, the beauty pageant has become a major philanthropy event in the Greek community raising over $1,200 in one night alone. Sigma Pi also participates in the Greek system’s Safe Halloween, Delta Gamma sorority’s Anchor Splash-benefiting the Blind (2004 champs), Alpha Chi Omega sorority’s Softball Smash-benefiting Domestic Assault Victims (2003 champs), Chi Omega sorority’s Karen King Kickoff-benefiting the Make A Wish Foundation (2003 & 2004 champs), Kappa Alpha Theta sorority’s Cook-off and tutoring for East Lansing Public schools.

Scholarship

Sigma Pi won Most Improved Fraternity Chapter GPA fall 2003, falling just short of the MSU All Men’s Average.  As the primary concern for Sigma Pi brothers, grades come first! Here at Sigma Pi we hold weekly quiet hours at the chapter house and weekly study hours at the library. The chapter house also maintains a current class file of old tests, quizzes and notes. Each new member and active brother must maintain a minimum GPA set each semester to participate in chapter activities. There are many academic and leadership scholarship opportunities available through Sigma Pi Fraternity, International’s Education Foundation as well. Scholarships can range in size from $250.00 to over $5,000.00.

Athletics

In 2003, Sigma Pi was crowned the All-Sports Fraternity Champions and our tradition continues! Sigma Pi is the top atheletic house on campus! Each year the Sigma Pi athletic program maintains its dominant status in the Inter-fraternity league.  We hold practices on a regular basis and compete in football, soccer, basketball, softball and volleyball.  Our house has many former high school and MSU club athletes.  Fall 2003, Sigma Pi placed first in football, first in soccer and first in the Alpha Chi Omega sorority Softball Smash tournament, in addition to first in the Chi Omega sorority Kickoff Soccer Tournament for the third year in a row in 2005! Fall 2005 Sigma Pi won the fraternity soccer championship for the second time in three years. If you are looking to contribute to a top-notch athletic house and sharpen your skills, at Sigma Pi you can do just that.

Altruistic Campus Experience

No other fraternity or sorority in North America completes a  project like this one.  The Altruistic Campus Experience is unlike any other program ever created.  Each year Sigma Pi chapters conduct an ACE Project on their campus in order to give back to their University.  Here at Sigma Pi, we believe in instilling pride and respect for one's alma mater by directly performing philanthropic activities and giving back to the university or its faculty, staff, and administration.  With ACE, you can do just that.  Year in and year out, here at MSU we strive to achieve this goal with our service and by joining Sigma Pi you can take part in this altruistic campus experience!
